The Annual General Assembly of the CENTR will take place in Warsaw on 25 – 26 February. CENTR is an organisation associating national registries of Internet domains (so-called country code Top-Level Domain Registries). The meeting in Warsaw will be hosted by NASK, which operates national registry of .PL domains.
At the two-day conference a new CENTR Chairman and five-person Board of Directors will be elected. During the last two terms of office, which lasted 4 years in total, function of the Chairman and a member of the Board of Directors was performed by Andrzej Bartosiewicz, head of the NASK Domain Division.
CENTR was established 12 years ago, in March 1998, on the initiative of several European registries. NASK was among founders of this association and from its very beginning has been actively participating in its works.
Tasks taken by CENTR include exchange of experience and so-called good practices between individual registries, combined with actions for development of new technologies and principles for registration of domains used in the DNS system. Major issues raised by CENTR included problems of the DNS security, development of the domain services and market, legal questions with regard to the protection of intellectual property and settlement of disputes concerning domains. CENTR closely cooperates with the European Commission and governments of the member states, ICANN and organisations which coordinate the process of registration of domains on both regional and supra-regional scale.
Currently, the organisation has 48 full members, 10 so-called associate members and 10 observers. CENTR is an association of primarily European registries, however there are also non-European countries represented in it, such as inter alia Canada, Iran, Israel, Japan and New Zealand. During the meeting in Warsaw, the Montenegro registry (.ME) will be officially admitted as a member of CENTR.
