IPv6 in NASK
NASK has rendered the main DNS servers available for the Polish .PL domain and made it possible to register Internet names in the .PL domain with indication to the IPv6 address. On June 4th, 2005 NASK rendered the main DNS servers available for the Polish .PL domain and made it possible to register Internet names in the .PL domain with indication to the IPv6 address.

NASK is one of the first registers of national domains in the world – apart from Japan, Korea, France and Sweden – which already provided this service for Internet users. The process of implementation of IPv6 in DNS by NASK was preceded by over one year of tests conducted in order to prevent possible problems and eliminate threats to the network security. Officially the implementation took place on June 4th with the change of configuration of names servers for the .PL domain made on all ROOT servers in the world.

IPv6 is a modern protocol, which will gradually replace the current IP protocol version 4. The main advantage of IPv6 protocol is a much wider range of IP addresses for Internet devices. Using this protocol will solve the problem of increased demand for fixed IP addresses and gradually exhausting IPv4 address pool. Due to potentially very high third generation telephony demand for IP addressing the IPv6 addresses will be widely used by telephone services providers – said Mr. Andrzej Bartosiewicz manager of NASK Domain Department.

Automatic configuration of network interfaces, built-in security mechanisms, such as encrypting and authorization, simplified header structure that increases operation speed or the possibilities of extending the header.

Currently we are just starting the implementation of IP protocol version 6. In time more and more Internet providers will use IPv6 in their networks, giving their subscribers the opportunity to use the advantages of this protocol. One should not expect the IPv4 to be abandoned in the near future. We will see the IPv4 protocol gradually replaced with IPv6, and the change will be more evolutionary than revolutionary in character – Mr. Andrzej Bartosiewicz added.
