The registration of .EU domain names is to begin on 7 December 2005. After 5 years of discussions and preparations, Europe opens the possibility to register Internet names that identify companies, institutions and individuals from the European Union.
The .EU domain registration system will be supervised by the Brussels-based EURid (the European Registry of Internet Domain Names) consortium. Users’ applications will be handled by EURid accredited companies specialising in the registration and maintenance of Internet domains. The principles governing the registration are laid down in the Commission Regulation 874/2004 of 28 April 2004.
In Poland, users will be able to register .EU domain names with NASK — an organisation with many years of experience in Internet domain registration offered directly and via partners. A EURid accredited registrar, NASK has already launched a European domain name pre-registration programme at www.DNS.pl.
Over the first four months between 7 December 2005 and 7 April 2006, only public institutions (including cities, administration, geographical areas as well as other departments and institutions having rights to specific names) and owners of registered trademarks are entitled to registering their domain names. During the second phase, registration will be open to all users, following the “first come, first served” rule.
We hope that by promoting the European domain intensively, Polish registrars will also help to boost general interest in the use of Internet domains. When the registration of .EU domains opens, we should see an increase in the number of name registrations in the local .PL domain. This will also be encouraged by special, additional discounts for individuals who register .PL domains through our partners, says Andrzej Bartosiewicz, Domain Department Manager, NASK. |
